Bison dance to victory
Seniors
Kevin Hamilton and Kevin Hyland will not be returning to the NCAA
tournament for their final year as the Bison defeated the Crusaders 74-59.
In the opening half, the game remained close between the two ball clubs
as there were six ties. Keith Simmons tied the game at fourteen with
thirteen minutes remaining, but Kevin Bettencourt of Bucknell responded by
triggering in a trey to give the Bison a three point advantage. With 11:40
remaining in the half, Torey Thomas hurt his knee and was taken out of the
game. He would not return with his full strength for the remainder of the
rally. Seconds later, Hamilton fired in a three to lock the game
at 17, but Bettencourt responded by making a three. With 4:44 left in the
first half, Tim Clifford tied the game at 34. Bettencourt replied
by putting the Bison ahead by three, 37-34. At the half, the Saders were
down by four, 42-38.
In the second half,
Hamilton drained a deuce to decrease the Bison's lead to three, 45-42.

back on top by seven, 49-42. With 11:27 remaining in the ball game, the
Bison increased their advantage to twelve points, 56-44. The closest
the Crusaders got to regaining the lead was when they were down by

SOME
THOUGHTS
I woke up at 6:00 AM on Friday morning to get ready and start packing for my weekend in Pennsylvania. Around 7:30 Jon picked me up and we drove to Holy Cross where we met up with Dave, who would be driving us to Pennsylvania. We made the trip in record time, about five and a half hours, and arrived at the Sojka Pavilion at 2:30. One Bucknell fan greeted me by saying, "Sucks to wear purple!" It was quite a welcoming statement. When Jon and Dave were trying to sell an extra ticket they had to Bucknell fans waiting in line, a group of Bucknell students passed by us and screamed in our faces, "Welcome to Sojka!" Jon and Dave didn't have much luck selling the ticket so we made our way into the gym. We went over and talked to "Hooptime" and Bob Fouracre. In order to reach them we had to pass by one group of students, who arrived early to the game to get front row seats. I cannot write what they said, but there were some "F" bombs in their sentences. I felt so loved. After we talked to "Hooptime" and Bob we made our way to our seats. We had to pass by another group of students, who gave us another warm welcome. Once we got to our seats, I saw two people who I regularly see at the Hart Center, who are the biggest Keith Simmons fans. One of the fans is named Jackie, and is a high school classmate of Keith's, and she comes to the games with her mom, Patty. So it was really nice to formally meet them, and they were decked out in their purple attire. Then two Holy Cross cheerleaders came up to us with some signs that they made for the fans to hold up during the game. The signs were great and really creative.
SUPER FANS: Dave (L) and Jon (R) hold up a sign made by the Holy Cross Cheerleaders before tip off. My Dad and his classmate, Dominic Keating, finally showed up. Dominic claimed that if Kevin Hamilton scored eight points in the first ten minutes, Holy Cross would win. He was not right this time around regarding the win. During the game I sat next to my Dad and a Bucknell fan. There were actually a lot of Bucknell fans in the Holy Cross section, so it was a little awkward. Unfortunately, the Bison won. I was devastated. I thought that I would get to go to the "Big Dance," for my senior year trip. I was hoping for an NIT bid, but I figured that the Cross would not get one with their record, and I was right. When the award ceremony was about to start that was when I lost it, and it hit me that the season was over for the Saders. After Kevin and Keith received their awards we departed the Sojka Pavilion. I did not get to say goodbye to the seniors or to their parents. My heart goes out to Hamilton and Hyland. I LOVED watching the both of you play these past four years. You are both great guys and I wish you the best of luck with everything. You both have great families and I will really miss seeing the both of you and your families at the Hart Center. When we left Bucknell, we had dinner at Stirna's. It is a great place with good food, and die-hard Syracuse fans. The entire town worships Gerry McNamara, a Syracuse basketball player. The next day, after I went to Steamtown for an in-depth train tour and to the St. Patrick's Day Parade (see parade photos at Annie's photos), I went back to Stirna's to take pictures of the McNamara shrine. After being in Scranton for a weekend, I became a bit enthralled with McNamara myself. I mean this is a small town, who has a real hometown hero. I have never been in a town that worships someone the way Scranton idolizes Gerry. Not only does Stirna's have a wall dedicated to Syracuse, but stores sell Syracuse merchandise because of him and there are even signs on local stores saying, "Go Gerry!" or "Go Syracuse!" It was just amazing to witness. Dominic, my Dad, and I hope Pat Doherty and Holy Cross can get this kind of worship in Scranton too before the end of his career. I think in order for this to happen, Holy Cross needs to get a lot of games on TV, and the likelihood of that is.....I'm not going there. Anyway, I became so amazed with McNamara that I picked Syracuse for winning the entire NCAA tournament in one of the pools I am in. Yeah....unfortunately for Syracuse, Gerry, Scranton, and myself Syracuse lost in the first round. I hope I do not get made fun of too much at work for this. Oh dear. On the way home, I had a flashback to my childhood in Vermont as the radio show, Lake Wobegon came on. When I was little, I would dance to the songs that came on this show and laughed at the host, Garrison Keillor's jokes, even though I did not understand the jokes. The last time I heard this show was when I was nine probably, and living in New Hampshire. Ten years later, I still think Keillor is funny and I still like the music he plays. Not much has changed. So hopefully whatever school I wind up at next year, I will still be Sader crazy! I'm just hoping that this Sader game was not my last game as a regular season ticket holder. Hopefully I will be a student at the Cross who attends the games regularly or maybe I'll be a manager with court side seats. I'll keep you posted on that one. Here's to the hopes that next season the Sader's will return healthy and ready for another successful season! Thanks for fighting through all of the adversity and challenges boys! You did a great job and the tribulations that you endured this season will only make you not only stronger basketball players and a stronger team, but more importantly stronger people. Till next season! [CROSSPORTS Note: I want to thank you Annie for all her wonderful game recaps, analysis and thoughts. I also salute you for your ever improving photography. With high school, college applications and work, you had an incredibly busy year yet still had time to do a stellar job at CROSSPORTS (pay attention Holy Cross Admissions!!) Everyone in the CROSSPORTS family wishes you the best with college and know whatever school lands you will be a better place for it!] Saders defeat Mountain Hawks, will play Bucknell for Championship Title

SOME THOUGHTS
The Saders certainly did not
come out on fire for this one. They looked pretty tense out there, but they
got the job done and that is all that matters. There is no way they can play
like they did today and beat Bucknell. They have been preparing all season
for Friday's game. In order for them to win, the Saders will have to attack
right away and continue putting the pressure on Bucknell for the full forty
minutes. I am fortunate enough to be attending this game. I have never been
in a situation where there will be a hostile crowd towards Holy Cross. It
will be a different perspective, and I wonder what type of creative chants
and signs the Bucknell fans will come up with. It certainly will be an
interesting experience for me. I also hope that a lot of students from Holy
Cross will try to make the game. The Saders need their support! So let's eat
up those Bison!!

the Year. Keith Simmons and Hamilton were named to the All Patriot League
First Team. Torey Thomas was named to the All Patriot Second Team. Alex
Vander Baan was named to the All Patriot Rookie Team. Congrats to our
Saders!
SOME THOUGHTS
This game was a great way to begin March Madness. Holy
Cross played really well in my opinion and did not allow Navy to gain their
momentum. I think that best part of this game was when Greg McCarthy was put
into the game and scored a deuce in the last few minutes of the game. I also
thought that it was great that all of the seniors from last year minus Nate
Lufkin, who is in Ireland playing hoops, came along to support the Saders.
Tomorrow is going to be a critical game. If Holy Cross wins, than they will
play either American or Bucknell on Friday. If Bucknell beats American, Holy
Cross will travel to Lewisburg, but if American wins, than they will travel
to Worcester. I do not think that there is anything easy about tomorrow's
matchup. Lehigh was looking to beat us a week ago, and now they are going to
be hungry for a win. They definitely will want their revenge against Holy
Cross since they blew having home court advantage for the tournament. The
Saders better be mentally prepared for this one and come out on fire!
Holy Cross cleanches home
court advantage
On
February 26th, Holy Cross defeated the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 68-54, enabling
Holy Cross to claim home court advantage for the Patriot League Tournament

attempted to gain the lead as they scored four points, decreasing the Sader's
lead to three, 9-6. Clifford responded by pouring in two foul shots, beginning
a 7-0 run for the Cross, which provided them with a ten point lead over
Lehigh, 16-6. With 5:47 remaining, Kevin Hamilton tossed in two foul shots,
giving the purple a 22-13 lead, which sparked a 13-1 run, allowing the Saders
to lead at the half, 33-14.
In the second half of action,
Lehigh came close to gaining the lead when the cut down the Sader's lead to
eight, 49-41, with 6:55 remaining in regulation. The Crusaders responded by
going on a 6-0 run to increase their lead, 55-41, with 5:19 left on the clock.
Jose Olivero of Lehigh tossed in a two point field goal to decrease the

GREAT FAN QUOTES
"Happy Birthday, Torey," after he

"Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Hey Hey
Hey Goodbye," after Jose Olivero fouled out.
INJURY UPDATE
At the end of this game, Kevin
Hamilton was injured in the jaw. On Tuesday during practice, he was hit in the
jaw again and will be wearing a face mask during the Navy game. He practice on
Thursday and played well.
SOME THOUGHTS
At the beginning of the game,
there was a special ceremony for the three seniors on the team. Kevin
Hamilton, Kevin Hyland, and manager, Chelsea Severson, were all honored for
their efforts. Keith Simmons was later recognized for scoring his 1,000th
point in the last game by being awarded a special basketball. In the first
half the Saders played really well as a team. Everyone came right into the
game ready to play and they laid their hearts onto the hardwood.
In the second half, the Saders
came out from the locker room strong again, yet Lehigh came closer to gaining
the lead. Luckily the purple responded quickly and prevented Lehigh from
gaining momentum. When Keith Simmons fouled out with 4:33 remaining in the
second half, I thought it was better for this to happen now than in the
tournament. I thought it was good practice for the team to learn how to deal
with this type of situation in an important game down the stretch. When Torey
Thomas fouled out with 1:33 remaining, I was just happy that there was not a
lot of time left in the game. Again, still it was good for the team to be in
this situation in a regular season game than in a tournament rally.
At the end of the game, Torey
Thomas came out from the locker room and the Hart Center burst into song as
everyone sang Happy Birthday to him. Keith Simmons later came out and was
given a cake and again the Hart Center sang him Happy Birthday. There were a
number of families in attendance- Vander Baan's, Clifford's, Hamilton's,
Hyland's, Doherty's, Dixon's..(just to name a few..I'm sure there were more,
but these were the ones that I noticed just because I know who they are.)
It is great to see the boys receive so much support from their families. My
whole family was in attendance as well for the second time this season. Greg
Kinsey's Dad also made the trip for the game so it was really exciting to see
him too.
I'm excited to know that I do not
have to travel. While I love road trips I would have had to miss at the most
two school days so it is nice that I do not have to worry about missing any
classes. I think that this game was a good sign for the boy's upcoming
tournament schedule. If they play like they did on Sunday I am sure they will
be successful.
Holy Cross raids Colgate
On Wednesday, February, 22nd, the Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the Colgate Red Raiders 62-56. In the first half, the Raiders went on an 8-2 run. The Crusaders responded by going on their own 9-2 run to provide them with an 11-10 lead over the Raiders. With nine minutes remaining in the half, the Cross was ahead by two, 19-17. The Crusaders built their lead up to eight points after scoring six points. Later, the Saders scored the last seven points in the first half to provide the purple with a 32-22 halftime advantage. Tomorrow's game against Lehigh will be the beginning of their challenging schedule ahead. This game will definitely be good practice for the Saders for their tournament schedule. Tomorrow is Senior Day so it will be a great opportunity to celebrate Kevin Hamilton and Kevin Hyland's hard work. SOME THOUGHTS
The race between Holy Cross and
Lehigh to see who clenches second in the
league, and gains home court advantage
in the tournament continues. Tonight's
game places a lot of weight on this
race. Holy Cross needs to beat Colgate
to stand a chance. Bucknell needs to
beat Lehigh for Holy Cross to gain home
court advantage. If all of this happens
tonight, Holy Cross will improve to 10-3
in the league while Lehigh will fall to
11-2, thus making Sunday's game at 1:00
at the Hart Center a real test for the
Saders to see how badly they want the
tournamet at home. Holy Cross will then
need to beat Lehigh on Sunday to gain
home court advantage as both teams will
then have the same league record with
11-3. Holy Cross gains the home court
advantage because they are ranked higher
than Lehigh in the RPI. So let's go
Saders and Bison!
Saders sail away with victory
On Wednesday, February 15th, the Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the Navy Midshipmen, 72-62. In the first half of action, the Saders struggled to build on a substantial lead as Navy brought a lot of energy to the hardwood. With 16:23 remaining in action of the first half, Kevin Hamilton converted on a two point field goal to provide the purple with a 7-4 advantage. This two point field goal sparked an 11-0 run to give the Cross an 18-4 lead with 12:27 left on the clock. At the half the Crusaders remained ahead with a 39-24 lead.
In the second half, Navy reduced the
Crusader’s lead to ten one two different
occasions. The first time occurred when
Navy cut down the Cross’ lead to 55-45
with 9:50 remaining, and the second time
was with 3:20 on the clock when the score
was 68-58. Luckily, Navy was unable to
build up enough momentum to steal the win
from the Saders. Last night the Midshipmen
showed a lot of heart as they did not give
up the entire game. Mat Fanin of Navy
especially displayed a great amount of
heart as he played twenty-nine minutes of
the game with a hurt ACL.
Bucknell comes back to
defeat Saders
On Saturday, February 11th, the Holy Cross Crusaders lost to Bucknell 57-52. With this win, the Bison clenched the home postseason seed for the Patriot League Tournament. The Saders opened up the first half on fire as they went on a 14-4 run. Bucknell began to creep up with the Saders when they decreased their lead to four, 23-19, with 5:35 remaining in the first half. Alex Vander Baan and Kevin Hyland responded by scoring a combined total of five points to increase the Cross' lead to eleven, 30-19. At the half the Crusaders were ahead 33-25. In the second half, the Crusaders went on a 7-0 run to increase their lead to fifteen points, 40-25. Bucknell began to come alive and pick up their game. With 7:16 remaining in the game, Charles Lee drained a three to decrease the Cross' lead by six, 46-41. Donald Brown responded by drained a deuce, allowing Bucknell to be within three points of tying the game up. Kevin Bettencourt locked the game at 48 with 3:40 left on the clock. Kevin Hamilton replied by triggering in a trey, but Lee and Bettencourt scored a combined total of five points for the Bison allowing them to gain their first lead of the game, 53-51 with 1:27 remaining in regulation, and the Crusaders could not recover. HOT PLAYERS OF THE BALL GAME Keith Simmons POURED IN 13 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and handed out 3 assists in 37 minutes. Tim Clifford JAMMED IN 10 points in 30 minutes. Torey Thomas DISTRIBUTED 7 assists, scored 5 points, and grabbed 4 rebounds in 40 minutes. Kevin Hamilton RIPPED DOWN 6 rebounds, and triggered in 12 points in 31 minutes. SHOCKING STATS OF THE BALL GAME Holy Cross was out-rebounded 31-28. Both teams were called for 19 fouls. On Wednesday, February 15th, the Holy
Cross Crusaders will play the Navy
Midshipmen at 7:00. Navy is coached by

GREAT FAN QUOTES "Teddy's Better," - Teddy Bettencourt went to Holy Cross, but his younger brother, Kevin, decided to go to Bucknell instead of Holy Cross. "You need glasses! You need to go see the eye doctor!" SOME THOUGHTS So I did wake up at 11:00 on Saturday morning, feeling confident that the Saders would do better than the last two times they played Bucknell. I arrived at the Hart Center around 1:00 and watched the women's team defeat Bucknell. Then thirty five minutes after the women's game ended, it was time for the boy's game. This game, despite the outcome, was a lot of fun. I loved to see all of the students come to support the Saders. They did a great job wearing purple, cheering, and making signs. The Crusaders definitely came out on fire, which is one of the lessons they learned from the last two games. In the last two battles against the Bison, Holy Cross did not come out on fire, resulting in the Saders struggling to get ahead in the game. Even though the Saders lost, I still thought that this game was good practice for the tournament time. This allowed the freshman to see what the games will be like in March. The season is not over yet, and the Saders still have a good chance to win the tournament!

SOME THOUGHTS
This game was a very special game for me
because it occurred on my 19th birthday. So
there is no place better to celebrate your
birthday than in the Hart Center, in my
opinion. Others will disagree with me, but I
don't care. It was really great to see
Hurley, Kinsey, and Sanchez there! I also
would like to make a shout out to Mrs. Cruze
( Kyle's Mom)- again thank you for sending
me the birthday wishes via e-mail. After the
game I talked to Kyle, who wished me a happy
birthday. Then I talked with Jen Toland of
the Telegram and Gazette. She
mentioned that she liked my pictures on
Crossports, so that was really cool and
exciting. My Dad also chatted with Kevin
Shea about seeing him box on television last
year. All in all it was a great way to
celebrate my big 19 with my Holy Cross
family.
Now Bucknell is tomorrow and I simply am so
excited I cannot take it! I may even have
trouble sleeping tonight. Actually, that is
a lie as I am WICKED tired after this week.
So I will probably sleep until like 11:00
tomorrow, and then leave around 11:30 to get
to the Hart Center for noon. The parking lot
is rumored to close around 2:30 so I want to
get a nice parking spot so I don't have to
deal with the traffic jam. So I will be at
the Hart Center all day, and am looking
forward to two exciting games, the women at
1:00 and the boys at 3:30! BRING IT ON
BUCKNELL! I am so looking forward to the
great crowd atmosphere! It will be fabulous.

a five point lead, 36-31.
With eighteen minutes remaining in the

SOME THOUGHTS
In
this game, the Saders clearly showed a lot of
heart and character as they came back from
being down at the half to winning the game.
Unfortunately the team would be tested yet
again as after the game their bus was in an
accident. Unfortunately, two teenagers were
killed in the accident as their car hit the
bus. More information on the accident can be
found in this article:
http://www.pennlive.com/news/expres...2200.xml&coll=2
My heart and prayers goes out to the families
of the teenagers. Fortunately, the basketball
team is safe.
On
Wednesday, the team will play Army in a game
that will be very competitive. The Saders
cannot over look Army as they need to stick to
their game plan in order to win. Luckily they
will have my birthday luck to help them out.

This was a hard one to

GREAT FAN QUOTES "Go back to foot locker!" "Who's your Daddy?" - After Keith Simmons major dunk. "Always trying to help you out!" - After Kevin Hamilton dunked the ball and bent the rim forward. It took the refs about 30 seconds to realize the rim was bent. SOME THOUGHTS I arrived at the Hart Center thirty minutes before tip off because I wanted to grab a nice parking spot on the top of the hill as I was solo for most of the game. I talked with Joe before the game, and met Tim Clifford's Mom, who complimented my work on Crossports, which was very flattering. The two highlights of the game were definitely the dunks by Keith Simmons and Kevin Hamilton as they were amazing. In the first half, the Saders seemed to be asleep out there. To say the least, it was not the most impressive half, but luckily the Cross bounced back by dominating the second half. Tonight the Crusaders have to play the same way they did in the second half in the Colgate game against Lehigh. Lehigh will be a great challenge for the Saders, but they must overcome this tribulation successfully in order to be in second place. GO SADERS!
Holy Cross wins 2000th game in school history against American
On Saturday,
January 21st, the Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the
American Eagles 74-63. In the first half, American
struggled to score in double digits early in the half
as Holy Cross jumped ahead 20-9. Points during this
run were poured in by Keith Simmons (4), Kevin
Hamilton (7), Tim Clifford (6), and Alex Vander Baan
(3).Yet, American found their stride and went on a 6-0
run to reduce the Crusader's advantage to five points.
Tim Clifford scored five points for the Crusaders and
Keith Simmons triggered in a trey to put the
purple ahead by thirteen, 28-15 with 7:25 remaining in
the half. American again went on a scoring streak and
swished in eight points, decreasing the Cross' lead to
five points, 28-23. At the half, the game was still
close as the Saders were only in the lead by four,
36-32.
In the
second half of action, the game became close with
14:16 remaining in action as the Crusaders were ahead
by one, 42-41. Yet, the Cross responded perfectly and
eventually increased their lead to ten points, 53-43
with under 12:30 remaining. The closest American got
to regaining the lead was when they were down by five,
63-58. The Crusaders maintained a solid lead
throughout the remainder of the game to provide them
with their tenth win of the season.

GREAT FAN / JOE QUOTE
So I told
Joe that I was accepted into Roger Williams. This was
his reply, "You're going to college at a zoo!" I mean
not only does he say that Dominican University is in
the Dominican Republic, when it is actually in
Illinois, but then he says that I'm going to college
at a zoo! What can I say...I love it!
SOME THOUGHTS
This game
was truly a great win as the Crusaders showed their
determination not to lose. Whenever American tried to
take over the ball game, the Crusaders responded by
increasing their lead. A great effort by the entire
team! Keith Simmons also did not seem to suffer from
any cramping, and he did have an IV an hour before the
game so that apparently helped. THANK GOD! So this
game was also a lot of fun because my entire family
was there, Mom, Dad, and my brother. That has not
happened in two years, so that was exciting! Then my
Dad's HC roommate came, Jim Tracy, and that always is
a treat. After the game we went out to eat for my
mom's birthday, which was Sunday. So all in all a
happy day, and I guess the Saders had my Mom's
birthday luck.
Now this
game against Colgate is a BIG DEAL! First of all, this
upcoming weekend's game is against Lehigh, who is
right now undefeated in the league. So if Holy Cross
beats Colgate and Lehigh beats Bucknell that means
that this weekends game just became that even more
important. I love league competition!
Eagles fly
away with victory
On Tuesday, January
17th, the Holy Cross Crusaders lost to the Boston
College Eagles 63-53. In the first half the Crusaders
gave a fantastic fight as they held their own against
the Eagles. In the opening of the first half there were
two quick ties (4-4) and (6-6). The Crusaders had
difficulty gaining a lead until Tim Clifford dunked the
rock to provide the Cross with a 15-13 advantage. The
game then locked up at 15 after Sean Williams swished in
a deuce. Kevin Hamilton fired back by draining a trey.
The Eagles swished ahead for awhile, until Torey Thomas
reduced their lead to one point, 24-23, after he
connected on a three pointer. At the half Boston College
was ahead 33-27.
In the second half of action Thomas cut down the Eagle’s lead to three, 33-30, and Kevin Hamilton scored another trey with 17:07 remaining in the game to minimize the Eagle’s lead by two. The Crusaders locked the game at 39 after Thomas drained a trey. Yet, Boston college went on a 5-0 run, which hurt the Saders momentum, and they were not able to recover.
HOT
PLAYERS OF THE BALL GAME

SADER SPOTTINGS
Ron Perry doing the cover for CSTV! GREAT FAN QUOTES “Just say no,” referring to Williams during his free throws. “Torey, make it happen!” “Good catholic scools, 5 Hail Mary, 5 Glory Be’s,” Dad- referring to the mini brawl between the ball clubs. SOME THOUGHTS This week was midterms at the regional, which is why my write ups have been late. I apologize, but I still chose to go out and have fun during my midterm week, and I have no regrets at all. This game was still a lot of fun, despite the loss. The night before this game, I went and saw the Lady Saders play Duke. I saw Torey Thomas, said a quick hello to him, and then I saw Coach Sachs, who reassured me that the Crusaders were ready for this matchup. Even though they did not escape with a win, they still held their own. During the game Keith Simmons cramped up a few times, which prevented him from playing. I believe that if he were in the game longer, than BC may not have returned to Boston with a win. So I look forward to tomorrow’s matchp with American, as it will be an exciting rally!
Bison shut
down Crusaders
On Saturday, January 14th, the Holy Cross
Crusaders were defeated by the Bucknell Bison 56-42. In
the first half the Saders opened up to a quick lead, but
the game was quickly tied at six with 15:50 remaining
until the half. The Saders struggled the rest of the way
as with 8:52 remaining the Bison leaped ahead to a ten
point lead, 17-7. Their lead only increased, and at
halftime the Crusaders were down by twenty, 34-14.
In the second half of action, the Crusaders went on a 10-4 run where points were swished in by Kevin Hamilton (8), and Keith Simmons (2) to minimize Bucknell’s advantage to fourteen points with 15:54 remaining in action. Bucknell’s lead was quickly cut down to nine points, 40-31, after Kevin Hamilton poured in four points and Keith Simmons drained a trey. Yet, the Bison quickly regained their stride and finished off the ball game with a solid victory.
HOT PLAYERS
OF THE BALL GAME
Kevin Hamilton JAMMED IN 18 points, ripped down 9 rebounds, and snatched 3 steals in 40 minutes. Torey Thomas HANDED OUT 4 assists, poured in 10 points, and grabbed 6 rebounds in 40 minutes. Keith Simmons DRAINED 12 points and stole four steals in 36 minutes. SHOCKING STATS OF THE BALL GAME The Crusaders out rebounded the Bison, 27-26. Both teams had 2 blocks. The Crusaders had 11 steals while Bucknell had 10. The Crusaders were held to shooting 29.3% from the field.
UPCOMING
GAME AGAINST BC
On Tuesday, January 17th, at 7:00 the Holy Cross Crusaders will play the Boston College Eagles at the DCU Center in Worcester. Last season they finished off with an overall 25-5 record and finished in first place in their conference with a 13-3 record. Their top returning player is Craig Smith, who averaged 18 points a game last season. SOME THOUGHTS On Friday I left for Scranton, PA where I would be staying overnight at a hotel with my Dad. The car ride was not too bad, at parts it was pretty foggy. I cannot tell you what parts because I have no sense of direction. So if you ever travel with me, you do not want me to navigate, unless you want to get brutally lost. We stopped for dinner at a place called, The Diner, which is such an original and creative name, I must say. Nonetheless, it was really good, and they had just about everything to choose from on the menu, making the selection process for the meal nearly impossible. So I went with a classic bacon cheeseburger, one cannot go wrong with this. We continued driving and arrived at the hotel around 10:30, not too shabby. Another Crusader fan, Jon, made the trip, so we discussed our plans for the next morning.
On Saturday
morning, I woke up around 8:30 ish, early for a
Saturday…too early, so I could go into downtown Scranton
to see a train. We met up with my Dad’s classmate, Dominic
Keating, who is an avid train lover. After we took
pictures in front of the train and received a mini
lecture, we went up onto this bridge and watched the train
pass underneath us. Well, this was something because the
noise was unbelievably loud. The train station is right
near a mall, so the noise from the train just bounced off
the surrounding walls. So loud, it was awesome. From there
we headed to Lewisburg, PA. It was a rainy drive, and I
pretty much zoned out and listened to my IPod. I am really
fun to travel with I must say. Luckily my Dad and Jon kept
themselves entertained. At the game we saw Kyle Cruze’s
parents, Kevin Hamilton’s family, Tim Clifford’s Dad,
Kevin Hyland’s family, Pat Doherty’s family, and I met
Lawrence Dixon’s mom. Two small groups of students arrive
as well. Now let me tell you, Bucknell’s gym, Sokja
Pavillion, is pretty sweet. Their alumni have deep, deep,
deep pockets. I mean this gym was NICE, great seats,
lighting, sound system, score board. If I had the money, I
would hand it over to the athletic department and say,
“Here, fix up the Hart! It needs a bit of an upgrade!”
So the result of the
game was not what everyone was hoping for, and many people
were reminded of last year’s patriot league championship
game. Bucknell is good, but not THAT good. They are
definitely beatable, and the Saders just need to realize
this. After the game, we drove back to the hotel in the
snow, and Jon departed for Worcester. My Dad and I stayed
overnight again, and we actually had dinner with Dominic
and his family, which was a lot of fun. All in all a great
trip to Scranton. Lewisburg would have been better if I
had left with a win. So bring it BC!

SOME THOUGHTS
So during
this game I sat with my Dad, Joe's family, and some of
my Dad's friends. Everyone was really enjoying
themselves and having a good time since the game was
going rather smoothly. At halftime I talked with Father
Hays for a few minutes and informed him that I was
deferred from the Cross until April. This simply means
that I will be reevaluated with the regular decision
kids and I will be notified again this spring. I am
still in the fight! Father Hays said to me, "Annie, you
have to get here!" I sure will try! Then I went on a
great hunt for quarters as the soda machines in the Hart
were not accepting dollar bills. Apparently they are
quite selective. After the game, my Dad and his friends
went to O'Connor's to eat dinner. I stayed after the
game and talked with Joe and his family while waiting
for Kyle Cruze and the coaches to come out. I am on a
great hunt for three tickets to the Bucknell game for
next Saturday so with their help hopefully I will be
able to track down some tickets so I can make my way to
Lewisburg, PA for the first time!
I think that
the Cross played a solid 40 minutes of basketball. It
was great to see Kyle, Greg, and Victor in the game! I
think the Cross started their league play on the right
foot!

SOME THOUGHTS
First of all I
have two really funny stories. At halftime I went over to
the opposite side of the gym with my Dad and brother to talk
to Crossports posters Jon, Dave, Jim, and Tom. We discussed
my dilemma with trying to decide whether or not I should go
to the Bucknell game, and I decided that I probably will not
go because I have midterms the following week. Then we
discussed my increasing anxiety as I await for the mail to
come everyday as in the next two weeks or so a letter from
the Holy Cross Admissions Office will be waiting for me.
Anyway as I was about going to leave to go back to the other
side of the court Jim tells me that he saw Chris Spitler
over the weekend at the wedding. My reaction went something
like this as I screamed, "Oh My God! You saw Spit!" I was so
excited! So I am going to track down someone who has his
e-mail so I can try to get back in touch with him as we lost
touch a few years ago when he switched jobs.
The next funny
story occurred during the second half. Joe asked me if I had
heard of some NBA player. I told him that I didn't watch the
NBA. His response was, "Oh I'm sorry! I'm Annie and I only
watch Holy Cross. You will be one of those people who won't
go to the Superbowl when you are a reporter because there is
a Holy Cross game. Sorry guys, I can't go to the Superbowl
because Holy Cross is playing Siena." Sadly this might be
true! hahaha.
This win I
thought was an important one for the Saders. They fought
through all of their injuries and came away with the win.
This shows their determination and sends them headed in the
right direction as the league games begin this weekend.

SOME THOUGHTS
On Friday my Dad and I drove into Newton
to catch the "T" to take into Boston, all of this took
relatively two hours because we got somewhat lost. Then we had a
little bit of trouble finding the gym, but it really was not too
bad. I just can say that I could never go to a school like
Northeastern with the campus spread out everywhere...I would be
so lost 24/7. Too confusing for me! At the game we ran into the
Hurley family, and it was really exciting to see all of them.
They said they will be making an appearance soon at the Hart so
I'm sure I'll come back with a lot of quotes from Mr. Hurley. :
) The game was absolutely fabulous! The Saders really never
allowed Northeastern to get into the game so I was happy about
that. After the game there was a post-game reception at a bar so
my Dad and I went with Crossports viewers, Ray, Dave, Jim, and
Kristyn. The free food was awesome, especially the nachos!
Afterwards my Dad and I walked around the Boston Common. We saw
people making the ice sculptures for First Night. There was an
anchor woman there from channel four news preparing to do a
quick broadcast, which was neat to watch. We saw people skating
at the commons and that looked like a lot of fun to do. Then we
grabbed a quick bite to eat at the Upper Crust, which had
great, fresh pizza. Great day, good times, BRING IT BU!

Saders Struggle in San Juan
This
past week the Holy Cross Crusaders traveled to San Juan to partake
in a three day tournament. The first game they played was on
Monday, December 19th, against Tennessee-Chattanooga, who they
defeated 82-65. In this rally, senior captain Kevin Hamilton was

to reduce Tennessee's lead to three points. At the half, the
Crusaders were ahead 36-35.
The Cross returned from halftime on fire as

Oddly, I did not have a lot of exams, just a take home Novel and Film test, and a math quiz on Thursday. Yet, I had to do a lot of reading for my Novel and Film class, about 50 pages a night, because since my school is under heavy duty construction books have been misplaced. So my teacher had to make us read through this book quickly so she could give her other novel and film class the book to read over vacation. So I simply did not have time to tune into the games. Also, the timing of the games were inconvenient, one was at noon, another at four. I also worked all week, which did not help tuning into the games any easier. Yet, I am really looking forward to my week off! I was really proud of the Saders for defeating Tennessee Chattanooga on my SIXTH YEAR CRUSADER ANNIVERSARY! I will always remember that Kevin Hamilton scored his career high, thirty eight points on that day. It is a better memory than losing to Vermont six years ago. I really did want to go to this tournament, but it would simply be impossible. There was no way I could go and not lose credits for my classes. You see, I take only two full year courses, meaning the rest of them are only half year. You can only miss seven half year classes before you lose credit, and I already had missed two days of school. So I was really bummed out that it did not happen, but what are you going to do? The Saders are still struggling, trying to find a way to win games with so many of their players hurt. I have no doubt in my mind that they will pull together as a team, and I am just grateful all of these challenges are happening now instead of during conference time. Crusaders eat up the Bears
On Wednesday, December 7th, the Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the Brown Bears in a thrilling 64-41 victory. The ball game opened up with the Saders struggling to hold onto the lead early on in the first half, but they quickly developed their stride. The Cross went on a 14-6 run to gain a 23-15 lead. One of the bigger plays of the game was when Keith Simmons had a huge block, and then he hustled back down the court to drain two treys, providing the Saders with a 37-22 halftime advantage.
In the second
half the Cross continued to play up-tempo as they increased their

draining a trey to reduce the Rams' lead by two. He followed
this play up by drawing a charge and making a lay-up to put
the game into overtime.

SOME THOUGHTS
This game was
absolutely thrilling! This team showed tremendous heart on the
court. They proved to the fans and to themselves that they
could fight back and win a game when they are down. I think
this win was an extremely important one as it will give this
ball club some added confidence in their capabilities as a
team.
During the game I sat on the other side
of the court with Jon, Dave, Dana, Kristin, and Jim. Sitting
on this side of the Hart Center certainly gives you a louder
perspective of the game. Not many people could be louder than
Jay Hurley, but I think he may have some competition over
here. After the game I said hello to former Crusaders, Greg
Kinsey and John Hurley. John was busy trying to find his cell
phone because he lost it, so hopefully he found his phone. I
went over to the other side of the gym and said hi to Kyle
Cruze's Dad, Buddy Cruze, who is in town until Thursday
morning. He is doing fabulous. On my way out of the gym, I met
Togo Palazzi, who is a Holy Cross legend. He scored 1,633
points in his career and he played for the Celtics in 1954.
His Crusader squad won the NIT Championship, an he was
selected the MVP of the tournament. He ranks second in career
rebounds (1,254). We talked about some of the athletes at my
high school. I will end this column with a quote from him:
"Losing is like dying."

Struggle Against Siena
On Thursday,
December 1st, the Holy Cross Crusaders lost to Siena
68-63. Unfortunately, I
was not able to listen to this match-up because I was working.
Neither of the schools' athletic websites posted a play-by-play
boxscore, so I am going to copy and paste the write-up from the
Holy Cross Athletics website.
ALBANY, N.Y. - Junior guard Keith Simmons (Kingston, N.Y.) recorded 20 points and seven rebounds, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Siena 68-63 at Pepsi Arena. The Crusaders fall to 2-4 on the season with the loss, while the Saints improve to 2-2. Siena started the game hot, and jumped out to a 12-2 lead after the first seven minutes of play. Holy Cross would respond with a 7-0 run later in the half, and trailed by just two points (26-24) at the break. The Crusaders tied the score at 29-29 early in the second half, but then the Saints went on an 8-0 to take control of the game. Siena would increase its lead to as many as 15 points (51-36) at the 10:35 mark, and was still up by 10 (60-50) with just over two minutes left to play. Holy Cross managed to make it a four-point game on a basket by freshman forward Colin Cunningham (Memphis, Tenn.) with 54.7 seconds remaining, but turned the ball over on its next possession and would get no closer than five points the rest of the way. Cunningham finished the game with career-highs of 16 points and nine rebounds for the Crusaders, while junior guard Torey Thomas (White Plains, N.Y.) added five points, five assists, five steals and 11 rebounds. Siena was led by Tay Fisher and David Ryan with 18 points each. The Saints made 10 of 22 three-point field goal attempts on the night, including five by Fisher and four from Ryan. Sophomore guard Pat Doherty (Scranton, Pa.) missed the game due to injury, while senior guard Kevin Hamilton (Queens Village, N.Y.) did not play due to illness. HOT PLAYERS OF THE BALL GAME Colin Cunningham JAMMED IN 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 30 minutes. Torey Thomas RIPPED DOWN 11 rebounds, handed out 5 assists, and snatched 5 steals in 40 minutes. Keith Simmons POURED IN 20 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 39 minutes.

SOME THOUGHTS
The Saders are still struggling
right now, especially with their injuries. Since Kevin
Hamilton and Pat Doherty were unable to play in the round-up,
the team really had to turn to the freshman to make some big
plays. Doherty is not going to be playing in the Fordham game
and Kevin Hamilton is questionable. I am confident that this
ball club will pull their game together soon, and hopefully
they will do that today against Fordham! I know they are all
hungry for a win!! Go get 'em Saders!!
On another note, while Holy
Cross is still my first choice for college, I was just
accepted into Dominican University in Chicago this week so
that was really exciting! I know people have been wondering
what has been going on with my application process so there is
an update.

On Monday, November 28th, the Holy Cross Crusaders lost to the University of Vermont 68-64. The game began close as the teams tied up the ball game at four, but the Catamounts quickly gained control as they went on a 14-3 run to lead the game 18-7. The Saders reduced Vermont's lead to eight, 22-14, but Vermont would not allow the Cross to come any closer as they increased their lead by ten, 31-21. The score at the half was 34-25. SOME THOUGHTS
This season has been an uphill battle for the
Saders. They came close to beating Vermont, but as I fan I know that
they are unsatisfied with their performance. I have no doubt that they
will come together as a team. Their struggles will pay off at the end
of the season when it matters the most. Hope should not be lost we are
only five games into the season. The team will continue to work hard
throughout the season, and hopefully they will earn a win at Siena.

SOME THOUGHTS
Well....I was out shopping and celebrating my friend's birthday during this game. I can pretty much say that I have no regrets on that decision, as this game was not a fun one. The Saders basically just need to learn how to win and fight through the trials that they are facing as a team. As a fan, I know they can do this, I have seen previous teams go through similar trials and all of them have been able to pull their way out of their negative mentality. I just think that the Cross needs a win soon to boost their morale, and hopefully they will beat Vermont. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crimson Crush the Saders
On Sunday,
November 27th, Lafayette will be at Princeton at 3:00. Lehigh will be
playing number four ranked Villanova at 7:30, and Navy will be playing

INJURY UPDATES: According to Coach Willard, Pat Doherty is trying to play through his foot pain, but he has lost some quickness at both ends of the floor. Willard fears his injury is getting worse, not better. Kevin Hamilton came into the Harvard game with a bad hip bruise. Keith still suffers from cramps, and Colin's nose is still broken. SADER SPOTTING: Greg Kinsey and Dan Brault were watching the game. SOME THOGUHTS: Well, I think everyone overlooked Harvard. Last year it seemed really easy for the Saders to beat them, but this year's Crimson came ready to play. I thought I would be able to celebrate by going to a Sader game after my stressful Tuesday, but there was not much celebrating going on at the Hart Center. Everyone was in low spirits, coaches, players, and fans. Hopefully the Saders will use their aggression about losing towards winning against Cincinnati. The Cross left Thanksgiving morning at six to travel to play this team. This is a reminder of the sacrifices this team has to make, as they could not celebrate Thanksgiving with their family. Their efforts are greatly appreciate by their fans. Now lets catch some bearcats! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saders triumph over the Tribe
On Saturday, November 19th, the Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the William and Mary Tribe 67-55 to become the champions of the William and Mary Tip Off Classic Tournament. The last time Holy Cross placed first in a regular season tournament was in 1982. One of the key successes to the Saders winning this ball game was their ability to prevent William and Mary from taking a lot of three point field goals, as they made ten three pointers in their game against Maine on the 18th. In the first half the Saders came out on fire as they jumped to an outstanding 28-9 run where points were contributed by Kevin Hamilton (12), Torey Thomas (5), Alex Vander Baan (2), Keith Simmons (6), and Tim Clifford (2). The Cross continued their up-tempo play as they scored eleven more points to finish off the first half ahead, 39-16. The beginning of the second half began with the Tribe scoring five points, yet the Cross was too much for William and Mary to handle as they struggled to gain the lead. The closest the Tribe came to obtaining the lead was when they were down by ten, 59-49. Kevin Hamilton, Torey Thomas, and Lawrence Dixon prevented the Cross from losing their advantage as they scored a combined total of eight points to secure the win.

SOME THOUGHTS
The Crusaders seemed to do an excellent job in sticking to their game plan during this match-up. All that I can think of right now is how exciting tomorrow night is going to be as the Saders kick off their home opener against Harvard. I doubt a lot of students will be in attendance as most will have left for their Thanksgiving break. Tomorrow I know I have two exams and a research project presentation, but this is simply the life of a high school senior. All the more reason to celebrate tomorrow night! Party Hearty! Happy Holidays!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saders hustle, defeat High
Point in season opener at the William and Mary Tournament
On Friday, November 18th, the
Holy Cross Crusaders beat High Point in their season opener 85-73 to kick
off their 2005-2006 campaign. The matchup between these two ball clubs was
a battle of two different coaching styles: Coach Willard, who
believes defense wins the ball game and Coach Lundy of High Point, who
wants his team to be one of the highest scoring teams in division one.
Tonight defense won. With the graduation of Nate Lufkin, John Hurley, Greg
Kinsey, Mike Smiley, and Dan Brault the Cross knows that they need to work
hard on their defense and rebounding to make up for their absence, which
is just what this ball club did as they outrebounded High Point 45-29 and
deflected the ball a total of eleven times.
In the first half the game
went back and forth as both teams struggled to hold onto their lead. There
were five ties in the ball game: 3-3, 9-9, 13-13, and 18-18. The Saders
took the lead for good after Kevin Hamilton poured in a trey and two foul
shots, his eighth point of the game, to establish a three point lead,
23-20.The Panthers trailed closely behind, but could not fight off the
Crusaders defense. After Hamilton clenched the lead for the half, Keith
Simmons exploded on offense as he scored twelve out of his
twenty-one points in the last eight minutes and twenty-three seconds of
the half The score at the half, 45-33, was the largest lead the Saders
had in the first twenty minutes of the game.
In the second half the Saders
increased their lead by nineteen points after Kevin Hamilton swished in
four points, Torey Thomas tossed in two foul shots and a field goal,
and Alex Vander Baan, Keith Simmons, and Pat Doherty each threw in two
points to give the purple a 59-40 advantage. The Panthers decreased the
Saders lead to four points, 65-61 with 6:54 remaining in the rally, but
the Saders fought High Point off as they went on a 20-12 run where points
were contributed by Vander Baan (4), Hamilton (5), Thomas (6), and Simmons
(1).

Tribe [William and Mary] defeated Maine on Friday the 18th to advance to
the championship. Last season William and Mary finished off with an 8-21
overall record. Corey Cofield is a junior forward who is the big man to
watch, as last night he scored a team-high 19 points. Freshman guard
Calvin Baker contributed 16 points in his first game of his collegiate
career, and should be watched out for as well.

SEASON PREVIEW /
SOME THOUGHTS
This season the Saders are
expected to place second in the Patriot League while Bucknell is expected
to place first. I disagree with this, but it surely will make the Patriot
League Tournament extremely exciting, but lets not get too ahead of
things. This year Kevin Hamilton was picked the captain of the team while
Kevin Hyland will be the co-captain. The Cross does not have too many home
games this season, as the only have one home game in November, against
Harvard, and two home games in December, against Fordham and Brown. They
are participating in a tournament in Puerto Rico in December This season's
freshman, Alex Vander Baan, Colin Cunningham, Lawrence Dixon, and Greg
McCarthy will be looked to step their game up and contribute early on in
the season. As of now the team is going through a bit of a rough spot as
their are several injuries. Colin Cunningham broke his nose, had an
operation, and will be wearing a face mask the entire season. Keith
Simmons is dealing with severe muscle cramps due to an unknown cause
limiting his practice time. Pat Doherty is still battling with plantar-fasciitis
(Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition caused by excessive wear to the
plantar fascia of the foot. The pain usually is felt on the underside of
the heel
and is often most intense with the first steps of the day).
Lawrence Dixon strained his hamstring and missed practice all of last
week. Overall, I think last night's game was a great effort by the Saders,
especially by those who played with injuries. This season is going to be
fun and exciting!!
